HGU visits SSU, sets agreement on UNITWIN Program

CATBALOGAN CITY – Psychology Professors of Handong Global University (HGU) visited Samar State University (SSU) for a meeting last October 15 at the President’s Board Room to address matters regarding the UNITWIN Program they will be conducting to the SSU Psychology students.

“It is always an honor to partner with HGU. It is an honor and we will always be inspired because they are one of the reasons why we have our mantra. We hope that we would have a very fruitful and successful partnership. Welcome and feel at home, this is your second home in the Philippines,” Dr. Marilyn D. Cardoso, University President, stated.

Professor Hyejeong Kim and Professor Hyeju Lee represented HGU in setting the specific terms of agreement for the extensive training they will provide the students under the Psychology program and ask the SSU faculty of the needs they would want to be met.

“So our aim for today is to introduce ourselves and our program and also to get to know your needs in Psychology department and we will see how we can fit it in the program,” said Professor Kim.

They emphasized that there is a need to communicate between the two Universities to help SSU advance their students in the field of Psychology.

“Basically, we are here to know what your weaknesses are in the department and see how HGU could help in advancing it for the students. You are free to talk about the Psychology program that you feel you are weak so you could get help from us and see how we can contribute to it,” Professor Lee stated.
They also said that they were torn between two countries as to where they will start the UNITWIN for the Psychology Program, and they chose the Philippines.

“The HGU is fully supported by the Korean Government and we help other HEIs in our country. It started in 1992 by helping 3 different universities and now we are having 60 countries in different areas. This year, the Korean Government is really happy on what we are doing so they increased the amount of programs. So we decided to begin the Psychology program. We were choosing to start our program in Malaysia or Philippines, but we chose Philippines,” Professor Kim stated.
HGU Professors said that it will be a one week intense program starting Monday to Friday.

“Usually it begins on Monday afternoon and the Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, 3 days, and Friday morning by having presentations by the students,” Professor Lee said.
The faculty, when asked of the specific points they are weak in, said that they still need assistance on Psychology Assessment, Family Therapy or Counselling Psychology and Industrial Psychology.

As agreed, the program will last for 3 years. Twice a year, three or four teamed-up HGU professors will come to SSU to spearhead the training-workshop.

“Our first engagement with the University will be this coming January 2020 and all expenses will be covered by the Korean Government but we still need your support,” Professor Kim said.

The UNITWIN/UNESCO Chairs Programme was conceived as a way to advance research, training and programme development in all of UNESCO’s fields of competence by building university networks and encouraging inter-university cooperation through the transfer of knowledge across borders.
