WE INNOVATE.

Samar State University is unstoppable in pursuit to generate new ideas and contribute to the advancement of the country, and 2019 has been a year of productivity. Joint with ventures to open new doors for all, the University exposes everyone to the world of innovation, with the chief aim of furthering the body of knowledge.

National recognitions manifested the innovative character and passion of the faculty and students. SSU bagged the Top Patent Filer of the Philippines for the highest patents filed from 2009-2018 awarded by the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPhil) on April 26, 2019 during the IP Convergence 2019.

SSU was also named as one of the 20 Higher Education Institution Readiness for Innovation and Technopreneurship (HEIRĪT) COHORT Universities in the country with the establishment of the Local Alliance of Marine-Based Business Processing Technology (LAMBAT). SSU passed the GC level of PCIEERRD and is assured of P9.98 Million funding to establish a Technology Business Incubation (TBI) Center.

Students from the College of Engineering (CoEng’g) bagged the First, Second and Third Places in the Outstanding Research Competition (Tertiary) Science Innovation Strand during the 1st National Convention of the Philippine Organization of Science and Technology Educators and also won the Alfredo M. Yao (AMY) Intellectual Property (IP) Awards for Collegiate Category (National Prize Winner).

Through BOR Resolution No. 23 s. 2018, these faculty and student-researchers were given cash incentives for their exemplary performance in research, innovation and publication. Translating innovation to utilization, two CHED DARE-TO projects of the University are in their full implementation stage at the Municipality of Matuguinao, Samar: (1) Design and Generation of Hybrid Alternative Energy Source for Remote and Rural Areas (Microscale) and (2) Development of Geo-Referenced Agricultural Mapping and Management System for Samar Island.

Seven CE faculty and the Director for International Affairs attended short courses along Water Resources and Coastal Engineering at Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (KULeuven) of Leuven Belgium, Delft University of Technology (TUDelft) of Delft, The Netherlands, Technical University of Denmark (DTU) at Lyngby, Denmark, and the Lund University in Lund, Sweden on March 18-23, 2019.

The University also took the opportunities to spearhead conferences and training workshops such as staging the 3rd National Conference on Poverty Alleviation & Sustainable Development and the 3rd National Conference on Methodological Advances in Research (NCMAR).

Intensifying the SSU branding program, the University conducted the Jingle Writing Competition Finals Night on November 11, 2019. The entry titled “SSU Soaring High composed by Obed and Lulubel llagan bagged the grand prize of Php 100,000.00.
