RIZAL PARK HOTEL, MANILA—Convening advocates for a common cause, Samar State University (SSU), together with its Co-Host, the Visayas State University (VSU), commenced the 4th International Conference on Poverty Alleviation and Sustainable Development (iPOVCON) at the Rizal Park Hotel, Metro Manila yesterday, October 4 (23).
This year’s theme centers on “Breaking the Cycle of Poverty through Health and Innovation,” underscoring the idea that high access to the two will significantly generate impactful change to the overall conditions of the people.
“Health and Innovation can be powerful catalysts for positive societal change,” said SSU President Dr. Marilyn D. Cardoso in her Welcome Talk as she highlighted the significant role of health, innovation, technology, and collaboration in the fight against poverty.
Jam packed with poverty warriors, the Day 1 of the Conference was graced by CHED Chairperson Dr. J. Prospero E. De Vera, III well-represented by , Keynote Speakers Sen. Pia S. Cayetano (duly represented by Mr. Emmanuel R. De Guia) who discussed on “Laws, Policies, and Programs in Poverty Alleviation/Health in Poverty Alleviation”, Cong. Michael L. Romero with his presentation on “Driving Sustainable Change: A Congressional Representative’s Role in Poverty Alleviation, Health, and Innovation”, Dr. Lope B. Santos who shared on “Poverty Alleviation Initiatives of the Government—Plans, Programs, and Activities”, and Dr. Maria Rosario S. Vergeire who tackled the topic “Breaking the Cycle of Poverty through Health and Innovation: The Role of Public Health Management in Poverty Reduction.”
Panel Discussants Dr. Tirso A. Ronquillo, Dr. Noel L. Espallardo, Dr. Marieta B. Sumagaysay, Mr. Bharat Lal Meena, and Atty. Jose Paolo M. Evangelista were also present to share their knowledge, expertise, experience, and initiatives on the lenses of different Institutions.
With a total number of 20 collaborators and 84 participants heeding the call towards poverty alleviation, the 2-day conference will resume today, October 5 (23), as it continues to feature research undertakings, local initiatives, and sustainable practices across sectors.
