SSU leads research ethics seminar among student researchers

CATBALOGAN CITY, Philippines — Samar State University (SSU), through the Institutional Human Research Ethics Committee (IHREC), is currently conducting a Research Ethics Seminar among SSU students at the SSU Main Campus, Catbalogan City, Samar. The sessions aim to orient SSU researchers on research ethics and ensure that their research studies are in compliance with ethical standards.

This morning, students from the College of Education, College of Arts and Sciences, and College of Nursing and Health Sciences attended the first session at the SSU Convention Center. Later this afternoon, students from the College of Engineering, College of Arts and Sciences, and College of Industrial Technology will participate in another session. On March 15, IHREC will conduct a similar seminar for graduate students.

During the opening program, SSU President Dr. Redentor S. Palencia delivered a message to the students, sharing the University’s responsibility of shaping a generation of researchers who are grounded in integrity and ethical excellence.

“Your research should not only seek answers but also reflect the values of respect, integrity, and responsibility,” Dr. Palencia stated. He noted that these initiatives align with the University’s Strategic Plan 2022-2027, which aims to strengthen SSU’s role as a leading institution in ethical research and scientific progress.

The seminar delved into various topics on the ethical conduct of research, including sessions on Elements of Research Ethics by Dr. Mae V. Cañal, Director for SSU’s Student Welfare and Development Services, and Research Ethics Review Procedure by IHREC Director Dr. Rheajane A. Rosales.

IHREC is also set to conduct another research ethics training called “Good Research Practice” for its committee members and selected SSU faculty members on March 24-25, 2025.
