SSU celebrates Kabilin 2024: Katbari han Kultura Samarnon

CATBALOGAN CITY, Philippines — SSU’s Research Center for Culture and Social Issues (RCCSI), in collaboration with the Office of Arts and Cultural Heritage program, staged a months-long celebration of the “Kabilin 2024: Katbari han Kultura Samarnon” from February to March 2024. The program featured various activities, such as book launching, cultural competitions, and seminar-workshop, aimed at promoting the cultural heritage of Samarnon people.

Mr. Jerry B. Gracio, award-winning Samarnon author and poet, visited Samar State University-Main Campus on February 26, 2024 for the book launching of his piece “An Ditoy Na Prinsipe,” a Waray-Waray translation of the renowned book called ‘The Little Prince’, written by French author Antoine de Saint-Exupéry. Mr. Gracio was simultaneously conferred with the University Medallion as a recognition of his outstanding contributions to the Waray literature.

Cultural competitions among SSU students were also held on March 12, 2024. To cap off the celebrations, a three-day training workshop on Cultural Resource Analysis in Aid of Cultural Development Planning was administered on March 13-15, 2024 with Mr. Lutgardo Labad of the National Commission for Culture and Arts serving as the resource speaker. The activity was participated by 30 tourism officers from the two districts of Samar province.

Kabilin 2024: Katbari han Kultura Samarnon, spearheaded by RCCSI Director Prof. Maria Rubi M. Parrocho and SSU Arts & Cultural Heritage Office Director Prof. Jhonil Bajado, provided a positive impact on cultural preservation, community engagement, and tourism development in the region.
