SSU revs up for Samar’s first med institute ‘SIIM’, conducts kick-off meeting

CATBALOGAN CITY – To further the goal of Samar State University (SSU) of ‘serving the communities of Samar and beyond’, the Samar Island Institute of Medicine (SIIM) was proposed to and endorsed by the Regional Development Council (RDC). With that, a Kick-Off Meeting with Dr. Noel L. Espallardo in the Establishment of the SIIM was conducted on March 3-4 (22) at the SSU Convention Center.

Through the expertise and services of Dr. Noel L. Espallardo, Member of the Board of Trustees of the Philippine Academy of Family Physicians, the crafting of the action plan for SIIM taken shape.  He created the tagline for SIIM: “My Community, My Classroom, My Responsibility”.

Dr. Marilyn D. Cardoso, University President, expressed her gratitude to the Dr. Espallardo for being instrumental to the establishment of her brainchild, the SIIM.

During the event, Dr. Ronald L. Orale, the Vice President for Research and Extension Services and the Chairperson of the Technical Work Group (TWG) of SIIM, presented the brief of the Pre-Feasibility Study of SIIM.

Also presented were the Faculty and Student Profile, Facilities and Laboratories, Student Services, Services and Future Plans of SPH and the Services of the City Health Office by the Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr. Felisa E. Gomba, Dean of the College of Nursing and Health Sciences Dr. Dolores L. Arteche, University Physician Dr. Tricia Analyn A. Yulo, Samar Provincial Hospital (SPH) Chief of Hospital Dr. Jonathan Gabriel J. Paquit, and City Health Officer Dr. Gerarda Tizon represented by Dr. Raphael Adrian Tabajonda.

“People spend their fortune just to save somebody yet we don’t have the facility. If this becomes a success, I think it will be something for Samar,” stated Dr. Orale during the closing program.
