SSU promotes voter education among youth ahead of 2025 PH polls

CATBALOGAN CITY, Philippines—Samar State University (SSU), through the Samar Island Center for Good and Local Governance (SICGLG), staged a voters’ education campaign dubbed as, “Breeding Informed and Responsible Youth: Voter Education (Your Vote, Our Future),” held today, May 9, at the SSU Maceda Gymnasium. This initiative followed the launch of the ‘TIUNOB: Marking the 2025 Elections’, a pre-election interview of local political aspirants in the Samar Province and Catbalogan City.

Over 300 students from across various colleges in the SSU Main Campus have actively taken part in the activity, which featured key discussions on voter education and screenings of selected interviews with local political aspirants.

SSU President Dr. Redentor S. Palencia graced the event and encouraged students to be responsible citizens and informed voters. Engr. Mirador G. Labrador, Vice-President for Research and Extension Services, was also present and gave the participants a welcome remark. Following these, SICGLG personnel Mr. Alfonso Alex C. Labrague Jr., discussed several key topics, including Choosing the Right Leaders, Spotting Mis/Disinformation, Why Your Vote Matters, Political Participation Beyond Voting.

In between the discussions, selected interviews of local political aspirants were shown to the students produced under the TIUNOB 2025 production.

The half-day activity was conducted in collaboration with the Institutional Human Research Ethics Committee (IHREC), University Publications Office, and the Student Welfare and Development Services (SWDS). Also present were Dr. Vivian L. Moya, SSU’s Executive Director for Extension, Dr. Abigail M. Cabaguing, SICGLG Director, Dr. Rheajane A. Rosales, IHREC Director, Asst. Prof. Elma C. Sultan, University Publications Director, and Dr. Mae V. Cañal, SWDS Director.
