SSU athletes triumph at SCUAA National Games 2025

CAMIGUIN ISLAND, Philippines—Samar State University (SSU) beams with pride as its athletes brought home various awards during the recently concluded National State Colleges and Universities Athletic Association (SCUAA) Games held from April 23 to 27, 2025 in Camiguin Island.

All throughout the games, the SSU Deer athletes showcased exceptional talent and determination, earning accolades across multiple sporting events.

In Archery Men, Yvo Jairus Tan (BSCE-1) was hailed victorious as a gold medalist in the 70-meter event.

In Sepak Takraw (Men Category), the SSU athletes composed of Lemmier Bautista (BSIT-4), Andrew Bensurto (BSInfoTech-1), Renz Llamado (BSInfoTech-1), Jorge Pata (BSED Math-2), and Jessie Rebato Jr. (CBVE ELT-1), secured the fourth runner-up spot. Meanwhile, the Women’s Sepak Takraw team, featuring Nicole Blanca Bacsal (BSInfoTech-2), Zoila Esequila Castillo (BSIT FST-1), and Jillian Villamor (BSInfoTech-1), achieved third runner-up.

In the Swimming (Men Category), Kevin Jay Abaigar (BSIT-3) earned the third runner-up spot.

The Table Tennis Men’s team claimed third runner-up in categories including Single A, Single B, and Mixed Doubles. The team was represented by Joweljan Arraz (BSIS Tech-3), Aldean Gacho (BSInfoTech-2), Simon Siachua Jr. (BSInfoTech-4), and Leonard Sultan (BSInfoTech-4).

In Taekwondo, Charlene Bruza (BSIT-1) excelled in the Women’s Bantam Weight division, earning the title of Third Runner-Up. Alongside Bruza, Ryza Mae Doinog (BSIT-1) also participated in Taekwondo (Women Category).

Lastly, the region’s Volleyball team (Men Category) showed impressive teamwork and resilience, finishing as Second Runner-Up. The team included Wes Bart Alegro (BSIT DT-3) and James Dale Sanico (BSIT DT-2).

The 18 athletes not only represented SSU but the entire Eastern Visayas region in the said national sporting event, themed “Advancing SUC Unity, Elevating Sports Excellence for Sustainable Development.”
