SSU Participates in 20th Manaragat Festival, Showcases Pantomina de Samar

CATBALOGAN CITY─ With a festive spirit in a show of support to the City Government of Catbalogan Tourism, Culture, Arts & Information Office, Samar State University (SSU) showcased Pantomina De Samar as part of the Cultural Presentations at the City Plaza on August 15 (23).

Pantomina De Samar is a popular festival dance in Northern Samar characterized by gestures and facial expressions which are tokens of love called love pantomime. This pantomime is performed by hand clapping or tapping the guitar’s surface, thereby producing resonance.

Directed by SSU’s Museum and Archives Head Mr. Jhonil C. Bajado and with students of at least a hundred fifty member cast and production team, the performance highlighted a folk dance published under the “Samar Folk Dances” book of Mr. Juan C. Miel with musical notations of Ms. Amparo Cinco-Tizon published in 1973 by the Provincial Government of Samar.

Under the 20th Manaragat Festival theme “Katawhan Katbalogan (People of Catbalogan): Dancing the Waves of Change,” SSU couldn’t be happier to celebrate Samar’s culture and appreciate its origins as performers dance to the waves of change.
