CATBALOGAN CITY – After a series of sessions of the Training on Open Water Self-Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus (SCUBA) Diving, six (6) faculty-researchers of Samar State University (SSU) were given the Professional Association of Diving Instructors (PADI) Certification on February 14 (22) and are ready to ‘document, preserve, regenerate the local reefs and the sea resources’.

With the chief aim to regularly update and enhance the capability of the researchers and extensionists in response to the needs of the communities and anchoring on the Center’s thrust to conserve aquatic resources for economic and environmental sustainability, the SSU Center for Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Research and Development (SSU-CFARRD) tapped the trainers from Catbalogan Community Environment and Natural resources Office (CENRO) headed by Master Diver Joan Dabocol for a diving training.

During the training, dive sites along the Sierra Islands were explored and several marine species were documented.

As one of the participants, Vice President for Research and Extension Dr. Ronald L. Orale stated on his social media post that the exploration will lead to the sea resources’ protection.

“We hope to pay Samar with stories under the sea. SSU Divers will dive to tell stories,” he stated.
