A huge amount of information is found everywhere at the tip of the finger. More so now that the pandemic hastened digitization of files in organizations including universities to cope with the demands and restrictions set by the crisis. And with everyone becoming vulnerable to be victims, or worse criminals of the 21st century crimes and concerns on data privacy, Samar State University (SSU) feels the urgent need to conduct a webinar that would secure and protect the university, its clientele, and other stakeholders from security issues and breaches on data privacy.

SSU through the Human Resource and Management Office (HRMO) invited Prof. Christian Bryan S. Bustamante, Ph.D., Certified Data Protection Officer of TUV Rheiland Philippines, and Data Protection Officer and Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences of San Beda University, to be the Resource Speaker for the Webinar on Data Privacy held via zoom web conference earlier today, December 17, 2020.

Prof. Bustamante engaged everyone on the discussion on Primary obligations of SSU as data comptroller, Lawful processing of personal information of SSU’s data subjects, Rights of the data subjects, Five (5) pillars of data privacy accountability and compliance, Privacy-by-design, and a Workshop on Privacy Impact Assessment.

“Always remember that privacy is not an additional requirement but must be a part of our day-to-day operation, life, and consciousness because we cannot deny the fact that every day, we are processing data and as data subjects, we are also sharing our data.” Prof. Bustamante reminded.

Said webinar is expected to equip both teaching and non-teaching staff of SSU with the knowledge and right understanding of the Data Privacy Act of 2012 which reiterates the sanctity of information and the right of individual to his/her data privacy.
