Guidelines for the 2018 Student Research and Development Competition

Who may join?

  1. All R&D projects (not limited to thesis project only) of students enrolled in the current semester in SSU are qualified to participate.
  2. All papers must have been pre-qualified first in their respective colleges, certification of such prequalification must be attached. (i.e. College Level In-House Review, Thesis Panel Review, College Dean & Research Coordinator Evaluation, and other form of review/evaluation or critiquing)
  3. All papers must be submitted on or before March 12, 2018 following the standard format suggested below.
  4. All research projects must be endorsed by their respective advisers noted by the Dean of the College and R&D Coordinator.

Criteria in paper presentation & submission:

  1. Papers must be organized using the following major headings: Title, Author(s), College, Abstract, Introduction, Objectives, Materials and Methods (for Experimental study) or Methodology (for non-experimental), Results and Discussion, Conclusion and Recommendation, References, and Appendices
  2. Abstract must not exceed 250 words with 5 keywords.
  3. Three (3) hard copies of the full manuscript must be submitted on or before March 12, 2018. Notification of the qualified entries will be on March 14, 2018.
  4. Full paper must be written in MS Word format using Arial font size 12. Manuscript must be typed single-spaced on A4 bond paper with 1 inch margin. Maximum of 25 pages (abstract included).
  5. Each presentor will be given 10 minutes to present then 10 minutes for question and answer portion. A copy of the power point presentation must be submitted not later than March 15, 2018.

Areas of Competition

There will be three (3) awards to be given for oral presentation and one (1) for the poster presentation. Paper receiving the highest rating will be awarded as the 2018 outstanding research & development project.  The rest of the papers will be ranked according to the rating it received. The next paper with highest rating belonging to the following areas will be considered as best paper.  If for example, a social science research was considered as outstanding, no more paper under the same category will be awarded best paper. This means that the outstanding paper on this area is also the best paper. All paper awarded must have a minimum rating of 85%.

  4. Best Master’s Thesis
  5. Best Doctorate Dissertation

GUIDE FOR ORAL PRESENTORS

  1. Papers must be organized using the following major headings: Title, Author(s), College, Abstract, Introduction, Objectives, Materials and Methods (for experimental study) or Methodology (for non-experimental), Results and Discussion, Conclusion and Recommendation, References, and Appendices
  2. Abstract must not exceed 250 words with 5 keywords.
  3. Three (3) hard copies of the full manuscript must be submitted on or before March 12, 2018. Notification of the top 10 papers to quality for oral presentation will be on March 14, 2018.
  4. Full paper must be written in MS Word format using Arial font size 12. Manuscript must be typed double-spaced on A4 bond paper with 1 inch margin.  Total number of pages must not exceed 25 pages (abstract and appendices included.)
  5. Each presentor will be given 10 minutes to present then 15 minutes for question and answer portion. A copy of the powerpoint presentation must be submitted no later than March 15, 2018. Prepare not more than 1 slides.
GUIDE FOR POSTER PRESENTOR
1.       One (1) Best Posters for Student and Graduate Student will be chosen across categories.
  1. As technical poster, entries should be prepared following the prescribed format:

Take-down:  May 17, 2018 (5:00pm-6:00pm)

Do not be too textual, this is poster not paper entry. Use more graphics for easier understanding.

Font Size 72 for title, 46 succeeding heading, 20 as minimum size for the text
  1. Presenter should be present during the scheduled poster viewing session, to answer questions from the viewers.
  2. No artistic fringes/borders, drawings and the like.
  3. Actual specimens/products may be presented but not attached to the poster. Bring your own table not wider than 1m.
  4. Posters that do not comply with the prescribed poster size will be automatically disqualified and will not be included in the judging.
