SSU houses S&T Fair for UCLG ASPAC ExBu 2017

Samar State University (SSU) in partnership with the Department of Science Technology (DOST) 8, Department of Education (DepEd), Eastern Visayas Consortium for Industry and Energy Research and Development (EVCIERD) and the City Government of Catbalogan houses a four-day Science & Technology Fair, April 4–7 (2017) in line with the hosting for the United Cities and Local Government (UCLG) Asia Pacific Conference (ASPAC) Executive Bureau Meeting 2017.

The honorable Stephany Uy-Tan, City Mayor of Catbalogan and Executive Bureau Member of UCLAG-ASPAC graced the first day oral paper presentation as the keynote speaker in the afternoon of Day 1, April 4 (17).

Ms. Dianne Shane Balindo from Samar State University presented a paper entitled “Climate Change Impact and Adaptation Among Mangrove Dependent Communities.” Mr. Las Johansen Caluza of Leyte Normal University with co-author Dr. Sherrie Ann Labid presented “World Views on Climate Change: A Latent Dirichlet Allocation Algorithm Application” and Dr. Elmer Irene presented a qualitative research on “Local and Indigenous Knowledge of Farmers cum Fishers for a Climate Resilient Community.”

Mr. Edgardo Guya, the City Environment and Natural Resources Officer of Catbalogan; Engr. Ramil Uy, Senior Science Research Specialist and Ms. Mae Ann Reyes, Supervising Science Research Specialist, both from the DOST Regional Office 8 evaluated the papers presented based on originality, relevance/significance of the content to the stakeholders, presenter’s knowledge of the content and confidence during the delivery. Several other researcher- authors are scheduled to present their papers in the following days of the S&T Fair.

The event’s soft-opening in the morning themed Climate Change Adaptation became an avenue to encourage awareness and preparedness among locals during calamities and disasters brought about by climate change. Aside from the successfully held Youth Conference and Focused-Group Discussions, the University co-sponsored a series of research paper presentations which started on April 4, 2017 held at the Audio Visual Room of Samar State University.

Students from various schools in the province of Samar along with their teacher-advisers filled the venue with representatives from the partner agencies.
