CATBALOGAN CITY – In coordination with the Municipal Local Government Unit (MLGU) -Jiabong, Department of Agriculture (DA) – Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) Regional Office VIII, DA – BFAR Provincial Fishery Office, and the Provincial Local Government Unit (PLGU) –Provincial Fishery Office, Samar State University through the Center for Fisheries and Aquatic Resources, Research and Development (SSU-CFARRD) held a Capacity Building on Red Tide Monitoring among Local Managers on April 12-16 (21) at the SSU Convention Center.
The activity attended by more than 30 local managers from the different municipalities in Samar was in response to the request of the Municipality of Jiabong to augment their knowledge and skills on monitoring red tide in their localities.
According to the SSU-CFARRD Director, Prof. Diana Shane Balindo, the extension activity will empower the marine ecosystem’s sustainability and productivity.
Gracing also in the five-day event were Dr. Marilyn D. Cardoso (University President), Kris Bulan (BFAR Province of Samar-Laboratory Inspector I), Chona S. Levardo (BFAR Region VIII), Ruel H. Amascual, Ma. Luningning L. Amparado, and Dr. Ronald L. Orale (Vice President for Research and Extension Services).
Through the activity, new livelihood opportunities for mussel and tilapia were introduced, skills of Point of Sales in product development were enhanced, and new skills in monitoring red tide occurrence were developed among the local manager-attendees.
