CATBALOGAN CITY – Samar State University (SSU) through the Gender and Development (GAD) Center spearheaded the Seminar on Human Rights with the theme “EQUALITY, EQUITY, JUSTICE: The Role of Academia in the Protection and Promotion of Human Rights” on March 30 (21) via Zoom.
Participated by selected SSU personnel, faculty members, and students, the webinar featured topics on 1) General Principles on Human Rights and the Role of the Academe on the Promotion and Protection of Human Rights tackled by Atty. Leo S. Giron, a legal practitioner and professor at St. Paul’s College of Law, and 2) Different Gender Issues and How it Violates Human Rights discussed by Atty. Dennis G. Cosmod, Administrative Officer of the City Government of Catbalogan.
The event took off with a welcome message from the University President who champions the cause of protecting and promoting human rights, Dr. Marilyn D. Cardoso.
GAD Coordinators, Prof. Alevir O. De Guia and Prof. Charmaine R. Quiña, gave the rationale of the seminar and introduced the resource speakers, respectively.
“There is a prevalent need to inform the students and the University personnel of their role in fostering human rights,” said the Vice president for Research and Extension, Dr. Ronald L. Orale, in his closing remarks.
The online seminar aimed to discuss the role of the academe in protecting human rights in relation to various gender issues, a role SSU is seriously taking.
