SSU’s Enhancement of Fisheries and Water and Coastal Engineering projects are among the 50 Institutional Development Innovation Grant (IDIG) projects approved by the Commission En Banc of the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) last October and November 2017. The two projects has a total budgetary requirements of about PhP 15 million of SSU are among the four projects in Region 8, the two coming from Visayas State University and another from Eastern Visayas State University. The two projects for SSU are the following;
1. Enhancement of the Samar State University Civil Engineering Curriculum major in Water and Coastal Engineering
2. Enhancement of the BS Fishery Program of Samar State University-Mercedes
As SSU prepares for an eventual amalgamation of universities identified Marine Sciences, Engineering and Technology as its area of focus. As a province where towns and cities are facing or surrounded with waters as well as high reliance to the products of the sea for food, livelihood and transportation, it is but proper to give due attention to this field.
The first project to be implemented this year aims to showcase how a program can be re-aligned to match the proposed banner program of a university. The field of civil engineering has five major areas, one of which is water resources engineering. This area is one of the most neglected majors compared to structural engineering. Samar has a lot of water resources but is unable to manage it well. It has a lot of water but water districts cannot provide 24 hours supply. It has so much water which is poorly manage that during heavy rains, flooding is common. Samar has a long stretch of coastal zones and almost all towns face the sea. With Samar frequently visited by typhoons, managing the coastal zones are very important.
The second proposal is to enhance the fishery program of the university. Despite the huge support from the government, fishery-related courses are the least subscribed. The course remains to be unattractive to prospective students and their families. The IDIG project aims to enhance the curriculum on all aspects to include its curriculum, capabilities of faculty through various programs, facilities and equipment. The second proposal will be implemented after the coastal engineering curriculum project is completed.
