Siyahan nga Pagsipat: Exhibit unveils SSU’s rich history

CATBALOGAN CITY, Philippines – Samar State University, through the office of the Museum & Archives, spearheaded the “Siyahan nga Pagsipat (First Glance): A History Forum & Pictorial History Exhibit” today, November 22 (24), held at the CAS Audio-Visual Center, Catbalogan City, Samar. Attended by over a hundred students, the activity aimed to celebrate and preserve the rich history of the university.

SSU President Dr. Redentor S. Palencia, represented by Vice-President for Administration and Finance Engr. Lourdes P. Amante, gave a welcome message to the attendees. Also present were several university officials, including the Vice-President for Student Affairs and Services Dr. Gina U. Españo, Dean of the College of Education (CoEd) Dr. Laura B. Boller, and Supervising Administrative Officer (Finance Services) Ms. Maxima M. Novilla.

The forum and exhibit were steered by Mr. Jhonil C. Bajado, Head of the SSU Museum & Archives, who delivered an insightful lecture centered on correcting erroneous information surrounding the institution’s history. Founded 112 years ago, SSU’s past was brought to life through Mr. Bajado’s detailed recounting of various historical facts and narratives, including its beginnings as the Samar Trade School (STS) under the leadership of its first principal, Mr. Cyrus M. Waddell.

Following the lecture, the audience walked through the Pictorial History Exhibition: A Rite to Remember held at the lobby of the SSU Convention Center. The exhibition featured the first public unveiling of Mr. Waddell’s photograph, and images of the pioneering batch of STS students. Along these, the exhibit also showcased photos of SSU’s former principals, superintendents, and presidents—giving a visual journey through the university’s evolution.

The event was organized in partnership with the College of Education (CoEd) and College of Industrial Technology (CIT).
