Pagpahayag Ug Kahayag: SSU’s Christmas Season Officially Begins

CATBALOGAN CITY, Philippines – Last night, November 21 (24), the Samar State University (SSU) community gathered at the SSU Biowall to celebrate the “Pagpahayag Ug Kahayag,” marking the unveiling of the Christmas Belen and the ceremonial lighting of the university’s festive decorations. The event was a joyful occasion that brought together students, faculty, and staff.

The evening began with the ‘Syahan nga Pagsipat han Belen’, a traditional unveiling ceremony led by SSU’s four Vice-Presidents (VP): Dr. Felisa E. Gomba, VP for Academic Affairs, Dr. Gina U. Españo, VP for Student Affairs and Services, Engr. Mirador G. Labrador, VP for Research & Extension Services, and Engr. Ma. Lourdes P. Amante, VP for Administration & Finance.

Following this, the ‘Paghimutang han Bata nga Hesus ha Pasungan’ took place, led by SSU President Dr. Redentor S. Palencia, Faculty Regent Mr. Jhonil C. Bajado, and University Student Council President Mr. Psalmer Dave D. Gulla. Afterwards, Rev. Fr. Joseph de Guzman and Rev. Fr. Aaron Peñaranda of St. Bartolome Parish led the blessing of the Belen, with Fr. Peñaranda sharing a message on the light that the university brings to the community.

“‘Light’ in the academic context is truth and knowledge, and SSU has been faithful to this mission. We become bearers of light because of institutions like SSU. Our presence here to witness this event is our way of recognizing this truth and recharging the light within us,” Fr. Peñaranda reflected.

The celebration continued with President Palencia and the College of Arts and Sciences, headed by Dr. Florabelle B. Patosa, leading the distribution of Christmas goodies to the young children present at the ceremonial lighting. The SSU Chorale and students further enlivened the event with vibrant Christmas presentations and songs, filling the night with festive cheer and music.

The ceremonial lighting of SSU’s Christmas decorations, a university-wide tradition since 2016, signals the beginning of Christmas season at SSU. This event highlights the university’s strong sense for community and cherished traditions.
