SSU traverses digital learning, global education in 2024 FDT

CATBALOGAN CITY, Philippines —229 faculty members of Samar State University (SSU) joined the official opening of the 2024 University-Wide Annual Faculty Development Training (FDT) on September 17 (24) at the SSU Maceda Gymnasium, Catbalogan City, Samar. This year’s FDT, hosted by the Office of the Vice-President for Academic Affairs (OVPAA), featured the theme, “SSU for Digital Learning: Shaping the Future of Global Education.”

University President Redentor S. Palencia, represented by Vice-President for Research & Extension Services Engr. Mirador G. Labrador, gave an opening message to the teaching workforce of the university.

“As you embark on this intellectual journey, keep an open mind and welcome new ideas. Remember that what we do isn’t just for our own advantage, but also for our students who expect that we can transform their lives . . . It is in your hands to make a difference,” President Palencia remarked.

Dr. Felisa E. Gomba, Vice-President for Academic Affairs, gave a rationale of the 3-day activity and emphasized the relevance of outcomes-based education (OBE) in the current tertiary education landscape.

The morning session was led by resource speaker, Dr. Jennifer A. Gorumba, Dean of the College Graduate Studies of the Palompon Institute of Technology (PIT), gave a lecture on instructional planning, classroom management, and pedagogical strategies. A workshop on cultural mapping and aligning course and program outcomes, and assessments was administered after her lecture.

Moreover, Dr. Jonathan B. Macayan, Dean for Digital Learning of Mapua University, served as the resource speaker in the afternoon session where he talked expansively about the fundamentals of OBE. A lively open forum culminated his 3-hour lecture.

SSU faculty members are set to learn about OBE and digital transformation in instructional delivery, global education, copyrighting of instructional materials, and gender fair education in the next sessions of the training.
