“The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.”

– (a quote from Lao-Tzu)

The 2017 Student Research Projects Competition held last March 8 at the CGS Building, took a notch higher in terms of innovation, creativity, competitiveness, variation of ideas and diversified inspirations drawn out from the four corners of research’s landscape. The said competition was indeed another one in the books for Samar State University’s renewed vision towards national growth and international recognition as an institution. This year’s Outstanding R&D Project was taken from the pool of ten (10) for Science and Technology, nine (9) for Social Science and Education, two (2) for Fisheries and Aquatic Resources and eight (8) for ICT and Engineering, for a total of twenty-nine (29) undergraduate studies.

The event was steered by the three centers embodying the different areas of specialization in the field of research, particularly: Center for Engineering, Science and Technology Innovations (CESTI); Center for Fisheries and Aquatic Resources, Research and Development (CFARRD); and the Research Center for Culture and Social Issues (RCCSI), directed by Engr. Mirador G. Labrador, Prof. Jesus T. Racuyal and Dr. Sherrie Ann Cananua-Labid, respectively. The aforementioned are under the precedence of Dr. Ronald Orale, VP for Planning Research and Extension Services.

Dr. Orale, gave his opening spiel, primarily sharing the strategic goal that everybody must realize especially on the route that the SSU is currently eyeing to pursue. According to him, SSU dreams to be recognized as one of the top twenty (20) State Universities and Colleges (SUCs) in the Philippines by 2021 and among the top two hundred (200) in Asia by 2040. This is the big dream of the University, one which will be a reality if everyone works strategically towards that end. High-quality researches and complete research undertakings will definitely play a vital part in achieving those ambitions in the next few years yet to come, he also added.

Prof. Jesus T. Racuyal, presented the participants per category and the esteemed panel of evaluators. Dr. Ronelle Salvador, Chairperson of the Fisheries Department of the University of Eastern Philippines (UEP); Veronica L. Reoma, Science Research Specialist III of the Southern Leyte State University (SLSU), and Rodolfo R. Dollado, Quality Assurance Officer of Northwest Samar State University (NwSSU), reviewed and assessed with the best of their collective expertise the twenty-nine (29) projects.

Dr. Labid, gave her closing remarks by acknowledging the staff and faculty for making the event such a successful and notable one. Furthermore, she also congratulated the student researchers and their corresponding advisers whom in one way or the other had gone above and beyond the call of responsibility in order to deliver and present justice to their hard worked research projects and for stepping up in the challenge so to speak.

Other major awards include Best Paper for every category and as well as one (1) Best Poster.
