SSU-CASPED, DepEd team up in Samar Folk Dances workshop

SSU-CASPED-DepEd-team-upSamar State University’s CASPED (Cultural Arts, Sports and Physical Education) and DepEd-Catbalogan City Division conducted a three-day Division-Based Dance Workshop on Samar Folk Dances as part of the former’s extension services program last February 13-15, 2017 at the SSU Maceda Gymnasium.

A welcome address by the CASPED Director, Mr. Randy E. Pacadaljen, kicked off the event highlighting his message consonant to the contextualized instruction of Folk Dances as integrated in the K-12 curriculum of DepEd. Likewise, Dr. Felisa E. Gomba, SSU Vice-President for Academic Affairs, emphasized the objectives of the said program in congruence to R.A. 10533 (Enhanced Basic Education Act of 2003), Rule II Curriculum, Sec. 10, 10.2 – Standards and Principles which elucidate the curriculum contextualization.

Talks and trainings on the first two days included the “Dance Terms/Dance Steps, Teaching Strategy in Teaching Folk Dance” by Ms. Lorna L. Gabon, CASPED Instructor; “Lingawin” by Dr. Madelynn N. Reposo, CASPED Instructor; “Jota ha Kalipay” by Mr. Michael Cupido, Folk Dance Instructor and Choreographer, DepEd-Samar Division; “Tagay-Tagayan” by Ms. Arlene H. Dela Torre, EPS-MAPEH, Catb. City Division; “Lajota Samariña” by Mr. Rowel A. Dacanay, CASPED Instructor; and “Pandangyado” by Dr. Reposo.

Dressed in their Samariño cultural attire, participants flaunted their talents in various Samar folk dances as the showcasing of dances was the highlight of the third day. Dr. Ronald L. Orale, SSU Vice-President for Research and Extension Services, reiterated in his message that the local cultural heritage must be uplifted and preserved through localization and contextualization of K-12 curriculum.

The distribution of certificates to the facilitators, resource speakers, and participants, and the closing remark delivered by Mr. Anecito A. Sultan, CASPED Extension Coordinator, gave closure to the three-day workshop.

The said program was participated by SSU faculty and MAPEH (Music, Arts, Physical Education, and Health) major students and DepEd-Catbalogan City Division MAPEH teachers.
