CATBALOGAN CITY, Philippines— Reinforcing its commitment to employee wellness, Samar State University (SSU), through the Office of the Vice President for Administration and Finance Services, officially launched its Weekly Fitness Program for non-teaching personnel in February 2026.
Anchored on Civil Service Commission policies—CSC Memorandum Circular No. 38, s. 1992; CSC MC No. 06, s. 1995; and CSC MC No. 08, s. 2011, which adopts the Great Filipino Workout, the initiative underscores the University’s proactive stance in promoting a healthy and active lifestyle within the workplace.
The program is scheduled every Wednesday from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., to be regularly conducted at the SSU Maceda Gymnasium and/or other designated areas within the campus. It features a wide range of fitness and wellness activities designed to encourage participation and inclusivity among personnel.
Participants may engage in aerobics or Zumba sessions, calisthenics, stretching and mobility routines, brisk walking or jogging, and team sports such as basketball, volleyball, badminton, table tennis, and pickleball. Fitness boxing and other approved physical activities are also incorporated to provide variety and sustain engagement.
The launching program formally introduced the initiative to the University community on February 25, 2025. Ms. Arlene Tizon, Chief Administrative Officer for Administrative Services, presented the rationale of the program, while Dr. Tricia Analyn Yulo, University Physician, discussed essential health and safety services to ensure that all activities are conducted with proper guidance and precaution. In his message of support, University President Dr. Redentor Palencia expressed strong institutional backing for the initiative, highlighting the value of employee well-being in sustaining organizational productivity and morale.
Culminating the launch was a commitment statement delivered by Mr. Melboy Merciales, Head of the Physical Fitness and Wellness Program, affirming the University’s dedication to consistently implement and enhance the initiative.
Through the Weekly Fitness Program, SSU aims not only to foster physical health among its non-teaching personnel but also to cultivate camaraderie, teamwork, and a culture of wellness across the SSU community.
