SIIM Legal Medicine Debate 2025 puts spotlight on patient rights, ethical integrity

CATBALOGAN CITY, PhilippinesSecond-year Doctor of Medicine students at Samar State University’s (SSU) Samar Island Institute of Medicine (SIIM) showcased their sharpening legal and ethical reasoning during the Legal Medicine Debate 2025, held on November 14, 2025. Centered on the theme “Medical Confidentiality Must Remain Absolute Even Between Spouses,” the debate probed the complex intersections of ethics, patient rights, and familial relationships.

Guided by moderator Dr. Dennis Navidad, participants engaged in a rigorous exchange that demonstrated their preparedness for real-world medical dilemmas. Esteemed adjudicators Dr. Dolores L. Arteche, Dean of the College of Nursing and Health Sciences, Mr. Arthur L. Poblete, SSU Board Secretary, and Mr. Jhonil Bajado, President of SSU Personnel Association, provided expert evaluation and ensured a high-level academic discourse.

SSU President Dr. Redentor S. Palencia delivered the closing remarks, commending the students for their thoughtful arguments and emphasizing the essential role of integrity and ethical responsibility in the medical profession.

The activity strongly supports SDG 3: Good Health and Well-Being by fostering future physicians who are grounded in ethical medical practice and patient protection. It also advances SDG 4: Quality Education, as the debate strengthens critical thinking, professional ethics, and interdisciplinary learning. Additionally, the event contributes to SDG 16: Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions by promoting legal literacy, accountability, and respect for human rights within the healthcare system.
