SSU Emergency Response Team

CATBALOGAN CITY, Philippines—With the threat of severe tropical storm ‘Tino’ (Kalmaegi), the Samar State University Emergency Response Team puts the safety and well-being of the SSU community at top priority through collective vigilance and timely response.

What to do? Here are some Typhoon Safety Tips from the SSU Emergency Response Team:

Before the Typhoon (Prepare)

    • Stay informed: Follow updates from DOST-PAGASA, NDRRMC, and LGU/local DRRM offices.
    • Charge electronics/lamps: Check if your dorm or boarding house is in a flood-prone or landslide-prone area.
    • Prepare a Go Bag: Water, snacks, flashlight, batteries, mask, first aid, charger, ID, important documents, etc.
    • Secure your space: Close windows properly, fix leaks, and unplug appliances before the storm hits.
    • Save emergency numbers: DRRM office, campus security, hospital, and local authorities.
    • Know evacuation routes: Familiarize yourself with your school or community’s evacuation area.

During the Typhoon (Stay Safe, Stay Calm)

    • Do not wade in floodwaters: It may contain open manholes, sharp objects, or electric current.
    • Stay indoors: Keep away from windows, glass doors, and outside walls.
    • Monitor advisories: Keep turned to local news, DOST-PAGASA, or NDRRMC for real-time updates.
    • Use gadgets wisely: Save battery power for emergencies; text instead of call.
    • Stay calm and alert: Follow the instructions of campus DRRM, local authorities/LGU executive orders.

After the Typhoon (Prepare)

    • Check yourself and others: Give first aid if needed; seek help for serious injuries.
    • Inspect your surroundings: Avoid damaged buildings, hanging wires, or unstable structures.
    • Don’t go sight-seeing: Stay away from affected or restricted areas.
    • Boil water before drinking: Floods may contaminate water sources.
    • Document damage: Take photos for reporting to your university or barangay.
    • Wait for official clearance: Return to dorms or classes only when authorities declare it safe.
