SSU, Motiong LGU ink MOA for Coconut-Based Livelihood, Product Innovation Training Program

CATBALOGAN CITY, Philippines—Samar State University (SSU) and the Local Government Unit (LGU) of Motiong, Samar formally signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) for the implementation of the Coconut-based Livelihood and Product Innovation Training Program: Capacity Building on the Formulation and Production of Coconut Water Vinegar, Coco Water White Wine, Coconut Milk Soap Making, and Virgin Coconut Oil Production for Coconut Farmers and Processors in Samar.`

The initiative, spearheaded by SSU’s Center for Lifelong Learning (CeLL), is led by Mr. Ruel Amascual, Mr. Ronnie Velasco, Ms. Ludy Velasco, Ms. Myrna Ando, Engr. Aldrin Maglahus, and Ms. Nelinda Tan. The program aims to strengthen the coconut industry by capacitating farmers and processors with value-adding skills, entrepreneurial knowledge, and innovative production methods. Per MOA, the residents of Motiong will undergo trainings coconut water wine production, coconut water vinegar production, coconut milk soap production, virgin coconut oil production, and buko pie production.

SSU was represented by University President Dr. Redentor S. Palencia during the MOA signing, while LGU-Motiong was represented by Motiong Municipal Mayor. Hon. Reny Anthony D. Cabael. Also present during the signing were Vice President for Research and Extension Services Engr. Mirador G. Labrador, CeLL Faculty Researcher Mr. Lemuel Karl Tadios, program proponents, and Motiong LGU municipal staff. The collaboration underscores the shared commitment of SSU and the LGU of Motiong to promote sustainable livelihood, community development, and innovation in the Samar province.

The program reflects SSU’s mandate to advance research and extension services while contributing to local development through education, innovation, and capacity building. By tapping into the region’s abundant coconut resources, the project also supports multiple Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) such as No Poverty, Zero Hunger, Quality Education, Decent Work and Economic Growth, Responsible Consumption and Production, and Partnerships for the Goals.
