CALBAYOG CITY, Philippines—Samar State University (SSU) earned multiple recognitions during the Visayas Consortium for Agriculture, Aquatic, and Natural Resources Program (ViCARP) Level 2 Cluster 2 Research, Development, and Extension (RDE) Review 2025 held from August 7 to 8, 2025, at Northwest Samar State University (NwSSU), Calbayog City, Samar.
Engr. Raven Tabiongan, Director for Samar Island GIS and Data Analytics Center (SIGISDAC), secured second place in the Completed Research Category through “Project MAPULON.io: Smart Mapping of Agricultural Production Using Locational Optimization and Spatial Data Analysis.”
Meanwhile, in the ongoing research category, SSU claimed third place with the study “Morphometric and Genetic Characterization of Blue Swimming Crab (Portunus pelagicus, Forskal, 1775) along the Eastern Coasts of Bicol and Eastern Visayas, Philippines,” through Ms. Diana Shane A. Balindo, Director for SSU Center for Fisheries, Aquatic Resources and Research Development (CFARRD).
SSU also qualified for the Regional Poster Session with the research “Detection of Paralytic Shellfish Poisoning (PSP) Toxin in Green Mussel (Perna viridis) Sold in Local Supermarkets in Samar, Philippines,” conducted by CIT faculty member, Mr. Ruel Amascual.
Over the years, SSU has been an active participant in ViCARP RDE reviews, showcasing innovative research. The university received accolades for its contributions to agriculture, fisheries, and natural resources development in the region.
The ViCARP Level 2 RDE Review serves as a platform for public dissemination of research and extension projects from state universities and colleges in the Visayas that aim to advance science-based solutions for regional development.
