SSU contributes to SDG 14 with study on microplastic contamination in table salts

CATBALOGAN CITY, Philippines—Samar State University (SSU) supports the Sustainable Development Goal 14 (Life Below Water) with the study, “Microplastic contamination in table salt sold in the selected local markets in Samar, Philippines,” published in the Scopus-indexed journal Food Research.

Published in Volume 8, Issue 5 in October 2024, the study was authored by the researchers of SSU Mercedes Campus (MC), including Noeme D. Pajarillo, Harold O. Panganoron, and Julie Ann A Arcales. Given its widespread use, table salt when sourced from saltwater faces a significant risk of microplastic contamination in regions like the Philippines. The authors then investigated the occurrence of microplastics in table salts from the local markets in Samar, Philippines.

Apart from SDG 14, this study also contributes to SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being) for looking into the potential health risks microplastics pose in food products like salt, and SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production) as the research also touches on the need for responsible salt production and waste management practices

This study was funded under the SSU Center for Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Research and Development (CFARRD). To read the full-text, you may follow this link: https://doi.org/10.26656/fr.2017.8(5).480
