CATBALOGAN CITY, Philippines— In support of the global goal to conserve and sustain marine resources, Samar State University (SSU) champions the Sustainable Development Goal 14 (Life Below Water) through the study, “Evaluation of the local ecological knowledge and conservation attitudes of fishermen toward blue swimming crab fisheries management,” published in the Scopus-indexed scientific journal AACL Bioflux.
Printed in 2024 at AACL Bioflux Volume 17 Issue 1, the research was authored by SSU faculty member and Director of Center for Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Research and Development (CFARRD) Diana Shane A. Balindo, and Julie Otadoy of the University of San Carlos.
The study provided a comprehensive analysis of the local ecological knowledge (LEK) and attitudes of 245 crab fishermen in the Eastern Philippines on the conservation of the Philippine blue swimming crab (BSC), Portunus pelagicus. The research highlights the potential for targeted education and awareness programs to enhance understanding and promote more sustainable resource management practices among local fishermen.
