SSU intensifies pursuance of GAD mainstreaming via gender fair education

QUEZON CITY, Philippines—The Samar State University’s Advocacy on Gender and Women Advancement for National Development (SAGWAN) is participating at the Gender Fair Education (GFE): Teaching and Learning Course held from June 23 to 27, 2025, at the Environmental Studies Institute (ESI) Conference Room, Miriam College, Quezon City.

Representing SAGWAN and SSU are GAD Coordinators Ms. Joan Baclay and Ms. Nelinda Tan, along with Ms. Hanna Joyce Macawili, Head of SSU’s Print and Online News Publication.

The five-day training is packed with sessions and interactive workshops on gender and education. Topics include key GAD concepts and cross-cutting themes such as Gender-Fair Language and Education, Gender and Visual Media, and gender perspectives in STEM, Social Sciences, Business, Statistics, and the Performing Arts.

By the end of the seminar, the SSU delegation is expected to deepen their understanding of GAD mandates for higher education institutions, and develop a syllabus using a gender lens.

The training is facilitated by a pool of gender advocates and experts from the Miriam College Miriam College–Women and Gender Institute (MC-WAGI) and Miriam College High School, including Ms. Stella Marquez, Faculty Associate of MC-WAGI; Ms. Frances Therese Zabala, Project Coordinator of MC-WAGI; Ms. Maria Pia Luque, English Teacher at MC High School; Ms. Lorna Israel, Faculty Associate at MC-WAGI; Ms. Jaira Lim, Science Teacher at MC High School; Dr. Ma. Paz A. Manaligod, Chairperson of MC Special Graduate Programs in Guidance and Counselling; Ms. Pacita Fortin, Faculty Member at the MC Department of International Studies; and other resource persons participating in the upcoming sessions.

SSU’s participation in this learning course is a valuable opportunity as the university continues to pursue its intensified mainstreaming agendum for gender and development.
