SSU hosts 3-day bootcamp to increase faculty research publication

CATBALOGAN CITY, Philippines—68 faculty members of Samar State University (SSU) are currently participating at the 2025 Publication Bootcamp administered by the Office of the Vice President for Research and Extension Services. The 3-day activity, which runs today, May 19, until Wednesday, May 21, 2025, at the SSU Convention Center, seeks to increase the number of published works of SSU researchers.

In his welcome message, SSU President Dr. Redentor S. Palencia detailed the significant mandate of faculty members in ensuring that the University will achieve its long-term vision of becoming of the Top 200 Universities in Asia.

“Doing research is a part of our responsibility as faculty because we share our research with the communities for the greater good . . . Embrace the learning and take advantage of this opportunity that will make your work more reliable and relevant—contributing to the body of knowledge on your respective fields,” President Palencia shared.

Executive Director for Research Dr. Sherrie Ann C. Labid further emphasized the importance of publishing scholarly works to ensure that scientific knowledge is visible and accessible.

“Despite the number of completed research projects, very few [of us] have transitioned into peer-reviewed publications, policy briefs, or tangible outcomes that extend beyond campus. Too many of our manuscripts remain in folders. Too much of our knowledge remains hidden. And when research stays on our shelves, its power is lost . . . As a university committed to innovation and service, our research must be visible, accessible, and impactful. It must be published in journals that the global academic community reads, respects, and cites,” Dr. Labid shared.

The three-day bootcamp is facilitated by experts including Dr. Don Eliseo Lucero-Prisno, Founder of Global Health Focus (GHF), Mr. Jerico Ogaya, GHF Senior Researcher and Program Manager of GFH University Excellence, Engr. Daniel Dasig, Jr., Head of the Research Ethics Unit of De La Salle, College of Saint Benilde, and Dr. Myra A. Abayon, Executive Director of the Leyte Normal University’s (LNU) Office of Research and Innovation.

The activity is packed with valuable topics, including a background of the scholarly publishing landscape, the realities and best practices of why many papers don’t get published, common writing challenges in various disciplines, write-shops, mentoring, and feedbacking on writing the different parts of a research article.

The bootcamp was organized in cooperation with the Planning and Management Office (PMO), and the Office of the Vice-President for Academic Affairs.
