PHREB administers ethics training among SSU ethics committee members, researchers

CATBALOGAN CITY, Philippines — The Philippine Health Research Ethics Board (PHREB), in partnership with Samar State University’s (SSU) Institutional Human Research Ethics Committee (IHREC), staged the Good Research Practice Training on March 24 and 25, 2025 via Zoom Web Conferencing. The initiative aimed to provide awareness on the importance of ethics in research and improve SSU researchers’ capacity for participation in the research ethics review system.

The two-day virtual training was participated by IHREC members and selected SSU researchers who have already undergone a basic research course. The sessions were led and facilitated by resource speakers from PHREB, namely Dr. Rosario Angeles T. Alora and Dr. Angelica D. Francisco. Dr. Alora, Chairperson of the Philippine Health Research Ethics Board – Subcommittee on Information Dissemination, Training, and Advocacy (PHREB – CIDTA), discussed the fundamentals of Good Research Practice, review of research methodology for scientific soundness, research dissemination and authorship, ethical issues in social research studies, and the ethics review process. Meanwhile, Dr. Francisco, Member of the PHREB Committee on Information Dissemination, Training, and Advocacy, tackled topics along indicators of social value, transparency in research and conflict of interest, ethical issues in protocol development and data analysis, ethical issues in observational and interventional research, and roles and functions of research ethics committees.

The activity was graced by SSU President Dr. Redentor S. Palencia who gave a welcome remark during the opening program.

SSU’s IHREC is led by its director Dr. Rheajane A. Rosales.
