The 15th edition of the UI GreenMetric World University Rankings revealed Samar State University’s (SSU) giant leap forward from 476th in 2023 to 352nd out of 1,477 institutions this year. With a total score of 7,260 points, SSU is now the top-ranking university in Eastern Visayas and seventh in the Philippines in terms of sustainability performance.
This ranking was evaluated based on the current conditions and policies relative to the sustainability efforts and institutional improvements of universities worldwide. SSU earned its top score of 1,675 points along Transportation (18%), where the university was assessed on its policies that limit the number of vehicles on campus, and encourage the use of campus buses and bicycles to promote a healthier environment and reduce carbon footprint.
SSU attained 1,575 points for Education & Research (18%) for its efforts in addressing and supporting the new generation’s concerns with sustainability issues. Moreover, SSU achieved 1,535 points along Energy & Climate Change (21%) for our focus on energy use, climate change issues, and energy efficiency efforts. SSU earned 1,025 points for Setting & Infrastructure (15%) with our commitment to safeguarding the environment and developing sustainable energy.
In the Waste (18%) category, SSU obtained 900 points, evaluated on our waste treatment and recycling programs and our waste production and recycling efforts. Finally, SSU scored 550 points in the Water (10%) category for our water usage, conservation programs, and habitat protection efforts.
The UI GreenMetric World University Rankings seek to present the current conditions and policies related to sustainability efforts and institutional improvements in universities all over the world. This year, the ranking institution introduced the theme “Instituting UI GreenMetric World University Rankings: The Way Forward” to encourage a collective commitment to building sustainable campuses for the future.
Under the same ranking system in 2023, SSU ranked 6th in the Philippines and 476th in the world.
