Tradesmen win big at 2024 Nat’l DABEST R&D Congress

TACLOBAN CITY, Philippines – Samar State University’s Information Technology, Information Systems, and Computer Engineering students won multiple awards during the 3rd National D.A.B.E.S.T. Students Research and Development Congress, held on October 17-18, 2024, at the Eastern Visayas State University (EVSU) Main Campus, Tacloban City.

Under the Science & Engineering strand, SSU bagged both the 1st and 2nd Best Paper awards for, “RURALCARE: A Smart Over-the-Counter Medicine Vending Machine with Medicine Recommendation” by Bachelor of Science in Computer Engineering (BSCpE) students James Paul Tan, Chad Vincent Florentino, James Adrian Tomakin and Pablo Q. Guilbuena Jr., and “Smart Precision Feeding and Monitoring System for Marine Pens and Cages in Samar (SMARTPEN)” by BSCpe students Michael Lawrence Boco, Arvin Tenasas, Via Angelica Jabines, Cedrick Hernandez, Francesca Joi Bocabo, Cristian Calipayan, and Pamela Sablayan, respectively.

Bachelor of Science in Information Systems (BSIS) students also won several awards under the Business and Economics strand with Efgen Domiel C. Berdin winning 1st Best Presenter award, and the team of Edhel John L. Zamora, Ace Llewel B. Tilles, and Efgen Domiel C. Berdin, with their coach, Engr. Homer D. Galaroza, securing the 2nd Best Paper award for their innovation paper titled, “Digital Solutions for Local Agriculture: Developing an E-Commerce Platform to Boost Market Access for Catbalogan Farmers.”

Under the Development Studies strand, SSU obtained first place for Best Paper award with the paper, “Disaster Preparedness and Response: A Mobile Application for Accurate Emergency Reporting and Community Alerts.” Moreover, Rustom Gacutara, BSIT student, obtained the 3rd Best Presenter award under said category. Finally, Chassey Gabon, BSIT student, obtained the 1st Best Presenter award under the Technology & Innovation strand.

Overall, Samar State University was hailed as the “Most Participative School” during the awarding ceremony held on October 18 at the EVSU Main Campus. These achievements showcase the dedication and commitment of SSU students to academic excellence and community-driven innovation.

The 3rd National D.A.B.E.S.T. Students Research and Development Congress was hosted by EVSU with the theme, “DABEST 2024: Igniting Young Minds, Sparking Innovation.” This year’s congress sought to foster a culture of curiosity and innovation among student researchers through showcase of researches and knowledge exchange.
