SSU clinches back-to-back grand prizes at AMY Innovation Awards 2024

PASAY, Philippines – Samar State University (SSU) clinched a back-to-back grand prize win during the Alfredo M. Yao (AMY) Innovation Awards 2024 held on October 22, 2024 at the Marriott Grand Ballroom, Pasay City, Metro Manila, Philippines.

SSU’s “MAPULON.IO: Samar Mapping of Agricultural Production Using Locational Optimization and Spatial Data Analytics” obtained the Grand Winner award for Professional Category—the first AMY Innovation Award of the university on the said category. MAPULON.IO is a web-based application developed under the Project GeoMap of the Samar Island GIS and Data Analytics Center (SIGISDAC). The award was conferred to SSU President Dr. Redentor S. Palencia, and the team composed of Project Leader Engr. Raven C. Tabiongan and members Engr. Merry Chris Margarico, Ms. Mari Pearl Rosario Alegria, and Ms. Khyla Marie Lauzon.

Furthermore, SSU Engineering students Mr. Mark P. Cris, John Vincent Mercado, Reymark Pagatpat, Seth Paul Babayson, Engr. Justin Manuel Mora, together with their coaches Engr. Nikko Ardel Floretes and Engr. Walvies Mc Alcos, also bagged the Grand Winner award under the Collegiate Category for their innovation project titled, “Synergistic Effect of Light and Sound in Enhancing Squid Fishing Efficiency: A Novel System Approach to the Marine Resource Management for Intelligent and Sustainable Practices.” This is the fifth AMY Innovation grand prize win received by SSU since 2016.

This year’s AMY Innovation Awards was part of the 50th Philippine Business Conference and Expo (PBC&E), hosted by the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCCI), themed: “Embracing Innovation, Empowering Business, Enriching Lives.” The prestigious awarding ceremony is an annual event that celebrates innovators, entrepreneurs, and students who develop products and services that boost innovation and profitability. The recognitions were given in the presence of Hon. Sara Z. Duterte, the Vice President of the Republic of the Philippines.
