CATBALOGAN CITY, Philippines — Samar State University’s Advocacy on Gender and Women Advancement for National Development (SAGWAN) successfully implemented the SSU-funded program, “Empowering Community through Health Promotion and Well-being” (Malusog na Mamamayan: Maunlad na Lipunan), on September 3, 2024, in Brgy. Albalate and Brgy. Palanyogon, Catbalogan City, Samar.
The extension activity, attended by a total of 52 parents and 156 pupils from Albalate Elementary School and Palanyogon Elementary School, two of the most remote primary schools in Catbalogan City, aimed to empower local communities through enhancement of health and well-being. SAGWAN distributed vitamins to the pupils in partnership with Pediatrica Inc., and free slippers sponsored by TheraBox Occupational Therapy and Physical Therapy Clinic.
Serving as a valuable research opportunity to investigate gender issues prevalent in these remote communities, SAGWAN conducted a gender analysis using the 24-hour activity profile, which revealed multiple burdens faced by women, traditional gender roles within households, and limited access to opportunities and resources. This is an example of what the university intends as it leverages research findings as basis for future programs.
SAGWAN Director Charmaine S. Quiña delivered a lecture on proper hygiene, nutrition, and dengue fever prevention, highlighting the residents’ need for improved education along these areas while SAGWAN Coordinators, Dr. Nathalie Ann A. Acosta, Nelinda T. Tan, Mary Jane B. Cinco, and Jasper D. Alegro facilitated the event.
