SSU promotes human rights, gender-inclusive DRRM in coastal communities

CATBALOGAN CITY, Philippines – Samar State University’s Advocacy on Gender and Women Advancement for National Development (SAGWAN) administered a two-day seminar on “Human Rights and Gender Inclusive Disaster Risk Reduction Management (DRRM)” from June 28 to 29, 2024 at Brgy. Maulong and Brgy. Bunu-anan, Catbalogan City, Samar, Philippines.

Joined by a total of 286 residents, the seminar aimed to promote human rights and gender-inclusive DRRM among the participating households. Serving as Resource Speakers were Atty. Ronil Bachao, Clerk of Court of Gandara, Samar and Ms. Grace D. Nube of the Philippine Red Cross (Catbalogan City) who talked about the crucial role of each gender (i.e., men, women, LGBTQIA+) in upholding human rights in local communities; and disaster risk reduction management, respectively.

This seminar is the second installment of SAGWAN’s program on “Gender Responsive Community Disaster Preparedness” which started on April 2024 at Bliss, Brgy. Canlapwas, Catbalogan City, Samar.

Catbalogan City, mainly composed of coastal communities, is among the identified highly vulnerable areas to natural calamities and SAGWAN takes action through this program.
