Samar State University (SSU) obtained a 4th overall rank in the Philippines, and is ranked among the 801-1000 higher educations in the world, for its contributions to the United Nations’ (UN) Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) based on the 2024 Times Higher Education (THE) Impact Rankings announced on June 12, 2024.
This is the first time that SSU entered the said global ranking system for higher education institutions, with an overall score of 61.3 out of 100.
SSU delivered its most outstanding performance on SDG #1: No Poverty category, ranking second in the Philippines and 101-200 in the world with a score of 63.3. This is owed to the University’s significant efforts towards poverty reduction, being situated in one of the poorest provinces in the country. These efforts are discussed at the annual Conference on Poverty Alleviation and Sustainable Development (PovCon), the only academic forum in the country that tackles the multifaceted dilemma of poverty in the Philippines—hosted by SSU.
Moreover, SSU attained significant rankings in other SDGs, such as Gender Equality (PH Rank: 4, Global Rank: 401-600), Affordable and Clean Energy (PH Rank: 4, Global Rank: 401-600), Decent Work and Economic Growth (PH Rank: 4, Global Rank: 801-1000), Life Below Water (PH Rank: 4, Global Rank: 301-400), Partnership for the Goals (PH Rank: 5, Global Rank: 801-1000), Good Health and Wellbeing (PH Rank: 6, Global Rank 801-1000), and Quality Education (PH Rank: 6, Global Rank: 1001-1500).
The Times Higher Education (THE) Impact Rankings is a global ranking system that evaluates universities across the globe in terms of performance and contribution to the 17 SDGs.
