CATBALOGAN CITY─ In a remarkable step towards protecting the environment through solid waste management, a pioneering Charity/Goodwill Hub was launched by Samar State University (SSU) on May 23 and 24 (23), respectively, near the College of Education- Mini Garden and the Administration and Finance Building-Edible Garden.
The Hub is a brainchild and a reentry innovation of the Vice President for Administration and Finance Dr. Gina U. Españo and her team after their Zero Trash Training: The 5RS Innovation of SSU in Environmental Management System in Kamikatsu, Japan on December 4, (22).
Serving as inspiration for the program was the “kurokuro” store which means “circular/cycle/going round and round” in Japanese. It will feature products that are viewed as “wastes” by some but are useful to others and will operate as a donation shop where products are not for sale but given away for free to people who need them.
“Through the Charity Hub, we initiate the best solid waste management solution for we do not only protect mother earth but we also recycle to care and we reuse to spare. Let’s build a sustainable program and nurture powerful values of charity and kindness,” President Dr. Marilyn D. Cardoso stated in her message.
As this Solid Waste Management Program of the University gains momentum and anchors on the seven waste management principles: reduce, recycle, reuse, remember, respect, refuse, and recover, this initiative is expected to revolutionize the way solid waste management is perceived and practiced not in only in SSU but in its surrounding communities.
