Eastern Visayas – Dr. Marilyn D. Cardoso, University President of Samar State University (SSU), was invited to speak during the Commission on Higher Education Regional Office VIII National Virtual Flag Ceremony on September 27 (21) via Zoom conferencing and Facebook Live Stream.
According to the CHED R8 Director George M. Colorado, CESO III, Dr. Cardoso was chosen because under her leadership, SSU has been one of the lead agencies in the region to alleviate poverty through its initiatives.
“Ang theme na pinili naming ay ang ‘Sa Pag-ahon sa Kahirapan Mataas na Edukasyon ang Kailangan’. Alam natin na dito sa aming rehiyon sa Region 8 ay mataas ang ming incidence of poverty at ito ang isang bagay na gusto naming matugunan din ng higher education. Kaya nga this morning, we have decided na imbitahin ang Samar State University with its president si Dr. Marilyn D. Cardoso. Siya ang nangunguna sa poverty convention. For several years, they have been doing this dito sa aming rehiyon and we would like to hear from her kung ano ang mga gawain at mga suggestions upang matugunan ang paghihirap ng ating mga kababayan,” he stated.
[The theme we have chosen is “Sa Pag-ahon sa Kahirapan Mataas na Edukasyon ang Kailangan”. We all know that the poverty incidence here in Region 8 is high and this is one of the things we want to address through higher education. So this morning, we have decided to invite Samar State University with its President, Dr. Marilyn D. Cardoso. She is the one who leads the poverty convention. For several years, they have been doing this here in our region and we would like to hear from her on what their best practices are and their suggestions to mitigate poverty].
Dr. Cardoso’s talk focused on the journey of SSU in combatting poverty through higher education guided and inspired by its mantra: “We Innovate. We Build. We Serve.”
Dr. Cardoso shared the poverty alleviation programs of the University and its ways forward which are primarily part of the University’s Strategic Plan 2022-2027 dubbed as “Future Proofing Samar State University” and anchored on the seventeen (17) Sustainable Development Goals of all countries.
