CATBALOGAN CITY – Samar State University-Eastern Visayas Center for Crustacean Research and Development (SSU-EVCCRD) with the support of the National Research Council of the Philippines (NRCP) assembled the Local Government Units (LGUs) and everyone involved in the fishing, trade, consumption, and management of Blue Swimming Crab (BSC) in Samar to strengthen the preservation of the BSC through a research and investment forum held on June 11 (21).
Almost 100 participants attended the forum via Zoom and live at the SSU-College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) Amphitheater from LGUs of Tarangnan, San Sebastian, Villareal, Catbalogan, Motiong and other sectors.
Dr. Marilyn D. Cardoso, University President, emphasized the need to conserve the living creatures like crustaceans and encouraged everyone to do their part.
“This is not just a program but an advocacy. Let’s work together for this worthy cause,” she said in her opening message.
Speakers of the event include the Executive Director for Extension and EVCCRD Program Leader, Mr. Jesus T. Racuyal; the Senior Aquaculturist of the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Region 6 (BFAR-R6), Ms. Sheryl V. Mesa; the Dean of the College of Fisheries UP Visayas, Dr. Emilia Santosa-Yap; and the RD Leader of SSU EVCCRD, Mr. Elviro A. Cinco. They discussed topics on the Significance of the Blue Swimming Crab (BSC), Current Initiatives to Develop the BSC Industry, Lessons from the Visayan Sea BSC Management, and the BSC Local and Global Market Potentials.
The Vice President for Research and Extension Services, Dr. Ronald L. Orale, tagged the event as a bubble of meaningful conversations about crustaceans.
And remaining true to its mission, SSU-EVCCRD will continue to stir awareness among the different sectors to increase the domestic production of the blue swimming crab or “Karawasan”.
