SSU-CFARRD takes the limelight at Kaigangan Biodiversity Research Webinar Series

CATBALOGAN CITY─ The Director of Samar State University’s Center for Fisheries and Aquatic Resources, Research and Development, Prof. Diana Shane A. Balindo and researcher, Ms. Jessa B. Madera presented their ongoing study titled “Mother Trees of Samar Island Karst Forest: Identification and Community-Based Conservation” during the third week of the Kaigangan Biodiversity Research Webinar Series on May 28 (21).

The series is an online event that aims to raise awareness on the conservation and sustainable use of Kaigangan (a local term for forests over limestone) Biodiversity.

Dir. Balindo and Ms. Madera shared the data gathered in so far across the three sites in Samar Island with side stories and fun facts about them.  They also gave updates on the activities led by the team and other future activities.

The research is part of the CONserve-KAIGANGAN, a research program funded by the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) and the Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development (PCAARRD) and led by the University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB). CONserve-KAIGANGAN is anchored on the mandate to safeguard biodiversity and ecosystems besides agriculture and forestry. 

Streamed via zoom and facebook, the webinar was attended by students and various professors and researchers from UPLB Institute of Biological Sciences, UPLB College of Forestry and Natural Resources, UP Manila, and Samar State University.
