RDC VIII endorses SSU SMART EduBox

CATBALOGAN CITY – The developed SSU Smart EduBox is a leap of progress in Samar State University (SSU) as students from the different municipalities with low to no internet connection can receive and submit their learning materials through a portable low-cost wireless sensor powered by a battery.

With its huge potential to aid the educational set-up in the midst of the pandemic, the Regional Development Council (RDC) passed Resolution No. 60, series of 2020 titled “Endorsing the Samar State Unviersity (SSU) EduBox Learning Management System (LMS) for Consideration and Possible Adoption by Other Higher Education Institutions (HEIs)”.

The COVID-19 pandemic has forced education institutions to adapt to digital technologies and flexible learning systems. The mode of teaching-learning switched from face-to-face to online content delivery. Internet became a commodity to learn, however, there is a geographical digital divide in the province due to limited internet resources or providers. With this, a growing concern for students without internet connection arose.

Several initiatives were implemented by the University to ensure that ‘no student is left behind’.

Engr. Jon Alvin Macariola invented the SSU SMART EduBox as another alternative to minimize cost, time, and contact between faculty and students.

The SSU Smart EduBox is a portable low-cost wireless sensor powered by a battery that is capable of data processing and data acquisition over a dedicated network of sensors with a varying distance from approximately 3 km to 22 km without a need of an internet connectivity.

With this technology, students may communicate to the University all the time and submit their accomplished learning packets wirelessly. In the same way, faculty may also use the network to send the learning packets to their students. This innovative learning modality that could perpetuate flexible learning is SSU’s another way of innovating, building, and serving.
