CATBALOGAN CITY – A group of faculty-researchers from Samar State University (SSU) started the making of a chemical-free mobile disinfection chamber as part of SSU’s efforts to combat the COVID-19 pandemic.
Disinfection chambers have been installed in several structures around the Philippines in an attempt to curb the spread of COVID-19. People are required to enter the chambers before entering the buildings and they are sprayed with disinfectant from several directions with the aim of killing viruses on their bodies and clothes. However, medical authorities have cautioned against the use of such chambers because chemicals cause irritation and harm the skin, eyes, and mouth. This is the reason why Engr. Nikko Floretes and his team accepted the challenge of the CHED officials to create a disinfection chamber without using any chemical substances.
“We already have simulated the automation system together with its control section. We are also done with the evaluation. Today, we made the 3D design for the casing of the automation system,” Engr. Floretes explained.
According to him, once the chamber is done, the installation of the automation system is no longer difficult.
“If this sanitation chamber is used, we are assured that everyone passing on the chamber will be cleared of the virus. This is better than the other chambers since we will not be using any chemicals,” stated Dr. Marilyn D. Cardoso, University President.
