CATBALOGAN CITY – “We have skewed conception on Intellectual Property (IP). We must clearly understand it especially that we are now fast in the area of Research and Development (R&D)”, emphasized Dr. Ronald Orale, Vice President for Research and Extension Services (VPRES) during his talk regarding Student Creative Works and Understanding IP Ownership.
During the third day of the Faculty In-House Seminar, Orale defined IP as the ‘creation of the mind’ and copyright, being one of the IP, was settled to conceal all original works of authorship fixed in any tangible medium of expression countering the misconception of what it really covers.
Orale also talked about the IP ownership and the duration of the protection. Copyright, Patent, Utility Model, Industrial Design, Layout Design, Trademarks, Geographical Indicators, and Trade Secret are different types of IP to own.
The copyright having the longest protection duration is shielded during the life of the author plus 50 years after the owner’s death.
The VPRES encouraged the faculty to maximize the benefit of IP for everyone.
One major output of a university is new knowledge, technologies, and graduates who possess skills to produce new knowledge and technologies among others.
“The IP created in the university must not be wasted. Information obsolescence is a waste of knowledge created. Maximize the resource, optimize the benefits,” he said.
