The College of Graduate Studies (CGS) in coordination with the Office of Planning R&E is conducting the first Graduate and Post Graduate Student Research Competition to be held this Saturday, March 11, 2017. The event is by the strategic targets of CGS to disseminate its research outputs to the wider audience; if not regional, national or international at least at the local level. As part of the challenge to make Graduate Education in SSU more comparable to international standards, the CGS has approved graduation requirements starting SY 2017-2018.Graduate education should always be about research, and its uses in many facets of one’s professional life say the CGS Dean.

For this year, all graduating students of the CGS are mandated to present their thesis, dissertation, development plan/school improvement plan or independent research as entries for the contest. One Best Paper award for each of the four categories will be selected. The paper with the highest rating from the evaluators will be chosen as the Most Outstanding Project for 2017.

This competition for CGS students will be held regularly, said the CGS Dean. She emphasized that for the upcoming school year, graduate and post-graduate student need to present one and two papers respectively as the mandatory requirement for graduation. In the succeeding years, a publication and international presentation will likely be implemented as a requirement for graduation. She also revealed that for the upcoming BOR meeting, CGS has proposed the inclusion of one component of the internationalization plan. Most of the initial activities are related to international engagement which includes patent/scientific peer-reviewed publication, paper presentation, industry immersion, and training/conference attendance abroad in lieu of either cognate courses or comprehensive examination.
