The Department of Science and Technology – Region 8 (DOST 8) and the Samar State University forged a memorandum of agreement to establish a common service facility (CSF) for root crop food processing through the adoption of the Philippine Root Crop Research and Technology Center (PRCRTC) at the Visayas State University (VSU). The said CSF is to serve the super typhoon Yolanda-affected communities in Basey Samar. CSF purpose is to elevate the socio-economic status of farmer beneficiaries by processing harvested crops such as sweet potato and taro into various products using technologies developed by PRCRTC-VSU. Further, the CSF will also be used by faculty and students of Samar State University during weekdays and the farmer beneficiaries on weekends. The project costs a little more than PhP 2M, 83% come from DOST and the rest is the counterpart fund from SSU.
