39th National Conference on Local and National History
Samar State University will be hosting the 39th National Conference on Local and National History on October 25-27, 2018. The conference is organized by the Philippine National Historical Society (PNHS) which was founded in 1941 and is the oldest organization of history scholars and practitioners in the country. The conference is supported by the National Commission for Culture and the Arts Committee on Historical Research (NCCA-CHR) and the Philippine Social Science Council (PSSC).
The theme of this year’s conference is “History and the Eastern Visayas: Local History in the context of National History.” The conference will showcase papers in social science disciplines and the humanities. There will also be papers on local history (regional/provincial) and national history to be presented. Studies looking at periods from prehistory throughout the colonial period, and especially during the 17th and 18th century are to be showcased as well.
Some of the papers to be presented include the paper of SSUs Jhonil Bajado entitled Women Chanters for the Dead in Eastern Samar and John Crossley of Monash University in Australia paper about the Spanish Occupation. There are also books to be launched in the said conference.
The conference sharing fee is PHP 3,500.00 per participant inclusive of a conference kit (Book of Abstracts and Program, CD of conference papers, complementary PNHS publication), lunch and two meriendas for the two-day conference (October 25-26). Breakfast, dinners, travel and accommodation expenses and a lakbay-aral (optional on October 27) are to be shouldered by the participants. Enrolled undergraduate students (with valid school ID) who will attend the conference will pay a discounted rate of PHP 1,500.00. Members of PNHS will only pay PHP 3,150.00.
