Catbalogan City – Dr. Marilyn D. Cardoso, the first female president of Samar State University (SSU), delivered the very first State of the University Address (SUA) today, Tuesday August 8, at the Provincial Gym.

Anchored on her tagline “Building a Culture of Excellence,” Dr. Cardoso imparted in her SUA the achievements of SSU since her installment as the University President last March 11, 2016 to July 2017.  The SUA centered on the four-point agenda of the President: excellence in instruction, excellence in research and development, excellence in production and resource generation, and organizational excellence.

Among the many accomplishments mentioned are:  25 AACUP-accredited programs of the 29 offered by SSU; attendance of SSU faculty, staff, and students in international trainings/programs; grand slam in the Regional Invention Contest and Exhibit (RICE); publications and citations in the Institute of Scientific Information (ISI); recipient of the 2016 Alfredo M. Yap (AMY) Intellectual Property (IP) National Grand Prize Award for Collegiate Category; Institutional Development and Innovation Grants (IDIG); SSU Main, Mercedes and Paranas campuses as ISO 9001:2008 Certified by the AJA Registrars, Inc; and facelift of the SSU Main front perimeter fence into bio-fence- first among SUCs in Eastern Visayas.

The President also laid her future plans for SSU through a Road Map which ends in 2040 with SSU being one of the top 200 HEIs in Asia.  She also envisioned SSU as the acrostic SMARTER: S-sustainable, M-mission driven, A-adaptive, R-Resilient, T-talent honer, E-eco-friendly, and R-research university.

Dr. Cardoso’s SUA was applauded 38 times. The event was graced by Mayor Stephany Uy-Tan of Catbalogan City, Mayor Elena Dieza of Hinabangan, PASUC VIII President Dominador O. Aguirre, Jr. as represented by Naval State University OIC-President Dr. Victor C. Cañezo, Jr., Provincial Board Member Alvin Abejuela, and media men.  The SUA concluded with a press conference at the SSU Board Room.
