PRE office seeks help from the South

“We really need this,” Engr. Ronald L. Orale the Vice President for Planning, Research and Extension welcomed the 8 faculty coordinators and 6 student volunteer Disk Jockeys (DJs) Monday, Oct. 10 (16)  acknowledging Mrs. Ademina O. Carreno a Broadcast Program Supervisor and Extension Training Officer and company from Visayas State University (VSU).

Mrs. Carreno “was invited through Dr. Ludito V. Ramirez a Journal Management Officer from Southern Leyte State University,” Dr. Redentor S. Palencia, Director for Publications, specified. She was trained in Netherlands for 6 months in General Production Course -Radio and 3 months Training of Trainers, month-long Training of Asian Institute of Broadcasting Development (AIBD) in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and one-month online Journalism Training in Germany.

Setting the View

The basics for radio broadcasting, scriptwriting, setting radio program priorities for school operations, voice production were collected from the participants’ expectations on what they like to learn generally receiving a ‘symbiotic relationship’ from the resource speaker with specific characteristics of patience, fun, interactive, lively and magaling (expert).

The levelling of expectations also throng straight to the participants’ themselves being passionate, enthusiastic, cooperative, purposeful, determined, lively and of course dedicated.

“Radio is a spoken word… So when you talk, it should be conversational,” Mrs. Carreno additionally highlighted this expectation as she started the discussion on Main Characteristics of Spoken Word.

Way Back into History

Engr. Ruben Yboa the in-charge in technical operations of the University Radio selflessly gave his time to bring the story back despite his hectic schedule of the day from lecturing to supervising laboratory work.

He flawlessly related that DYSY 102.9 formerly named as Campus Radio was an experimental campus broadcasting with SSU funding in 1994. It stopped for a while but in 2009 planning and proposal were deliberated during the time of the former University President, Dr. Simeon Babalcon and Dr. Felisa E. Gomba then VP for PRE and Dr. Ronald L. Orale, Director for PRE before.

The Campus Radio was formally launched in February 14, 2010 with funding from Research Office with its goal to apply for permit and true enough in May 1, 2012 a temporary permit to operate was granted from National Telecommunications Commission with a call sign, DYSY 102.9.

Objectives in the house

“To equip the student volunteers and faculty radio coordinators with the necessary basic skills and standard radio operations and programming, to formulate radio programs suitable with the needs of the community for development and to continuously and strongly advocate research and extension services of SSU through broadcasting technology,” Dr. Redentor S. Palencia presented main aims of the 3-day Seminar-Workshop on Basic Radio Operations and Programming Cum Community Development which kicks off today until Wednesday, Oct. 12 (16).
